Madelon Hooykaas

In 1972, Elsa Stansfield (*1945 in Glasgow / United Kingdom, †2004 in Amsterdam) and Madelon Hooykaas (*1942 in Maartensdijk / Netherlands, lives in Amsterdam) began working together on fragile site-specific installations that combine video with photography, objects, and sound. Their works are characterized by a constant shift between mental and referential imagery. The combination of different media and materials allows the artists to consider differentiated levels of perception. In their early works in particular, Stansfield and Hooykaas engage with video itself as a medium, reflecting on aspects of temporality, movement, and materiality.
