Thea Djordjadze
In her artistic practice, Thea Djordjadze (*1971 in Tbilisi, lives and works in Berlin) questions the artwork’s status and its representation in the architectural context of the exhibition site. In fluid and non-hierarchical compositions, she blurs the boundaries between the exhibition architecture (display) and the artwork; the space is both a temporary receptacle and part of the exhibited works. Her installations are created from endless variations of materials and media: aluminum, wood, plaster, steel, stone, grids, textiles, found objects, paintings, and prints. They are like walkable “inner landscapes” that reconstruct feelings, memories, and desires in a minimalist language of form and continually rearrange them. An unknown country (2022) is a new series created especially for the n.b.k. edition program. Digital drawings were printed on aluminum and then manually processed by the artist. The work thus combines mechanized and handicraft processes, series and one-offs. Thea Djordjadze’s works have been on view in numerous international solo and group exhibitions including at: Musée d’Art Moderne et Contemporain, Saint-Etienne (2022); Gropius Bau, Berlin (2021); Kunst Museum Winterthur (2019); Portikus, Frankfurt/Main (2018); Pinakothek der Moderne, Staatliche Graphische Sammlung, Munich (2017); Vienna Secession (2016); MoMA PS1, New York (2016); Venice Biennale (2015); Documenta (13), Kassel (2012).
