Language – in both spoken and written form – is a central concern of Nora Turato’s work, which she explores through wall-based works, video, sound, performance, and her artist’s books in the pool series. She works with found material drawn from a wide range of sources, including the internet, social media, the press, books, film, music, and conversation. Collected by the artist and meticulously reordered, an overabundance of verbal material is distilled down to its essence. In doing so, Turato draws attention to the social conditions, developments, and phenomena that underlie language and shape its use. Her works reflect precise observations of a society heavily shaped by images and AI-generated content, while also drawing attention to shifts in language use and the accompanying shifts in meaning. At the invitation of n.b.k., Nora Turato has contributed three new works, all unique pieces, to the current n.b.k. Editions program. They stand in the context of they filled me up with words, her 2025 work conceived specifically for the n.b.k. facade, and the performance pool7, which belongs to the same body of work. These mark a turning point in her practice: unlike earlier works, they employ not only typography but also the artist’s own handwriting as a means of expression. Here, handwriting is treated not merely as a form of linguistic representation but, together with elements of gestural drawing, as a direct outcome of internalized behavior connected to Turato’s performative practice.
