2025, Objects no longer in n.b.k. use. 3 editions plus 2 artist proofs, dimensions variable, certificate, signed and numbered
Ghislaine Leung
Based on a rigorously conceptual yet deeply personal approach, British artist Ghislaine Leung creates works that make the social, institutional and individual conditions of artistic production palpable. Since 2015, Leung’s practice has been predominantly based on scores – written descriptions whose implementation is interpreted by the art institution and its employees – raising critical questions about productivity, labour, and value. The form of Leung's works is the result of a collaborative process that decidedly transcends artistic control.
Leung’s edition with the title n.b.k. Edition consists of a group of three objects no longer in n.b.k. use. These lights were selected with the artist from the n.b.k. basement storage where they have been since being removed from the institution’s offices. Once acquired, the lamps can be shown either switched on or off and displayed in any arrangement. Again rejecting the notion of the fixity of the art object, and allowing questions to be raised about what constitutes its status and value, and our role within that.
Ghislaine Leung (*1980 in Stockholm, lives in London) has presented her work in numerous solo exhibitions, including: Kunsthalle Basel; The Renaissance Society, Chicago (both 2024); Simian, Copenhagen (2023); Ordet, Milan; Museum Abteiberg, Mönchengladbach (both 2021); Netwerk, Aalst / Belgium; Künstlerhaus Stuttgart (both 2019); WIELS, Brussels (2016). In 2018, she published her book Partners (Cell Project Space), followed by Bosses (Divided) in 2023. In 2023 she was nominated for the Turner Prize.
