Herbert Wentscher

During the 1980s, Herbert Wentscher (*1951 in Oldenburg / Germany, lives in Freiburg/Breisgau / Germany and Weimar / Germany) occupied a unique position between video art and pop culture with his Videolieder (“Video Songs”). The catchy, calculatedly naive pieces set to electronic music are largely devoted to everyday themes. To accompany them, Wentscher designed visuals that ironically double and, simultaneously, question the songs’ ostensible lightheartedness. The artist began working with the medium of video as early as the 1970s. Since the 1990s, he has also created sculptural, installation, and text-based works.
