Mark Dion
Mark Dion (*1961 in Massachusetts, living in New York) in his artistic practice examines in what way the prevailing western ideologies affect our understanding of history, archeology and knowledge. In his installations and sculptures, Dion draws on archaeological and scientific methods, he transforms traditional classification systems of public institutions and questions classical contexts of knowledge transfer. In On the Topic of Hunting (2015), Dion plays with the imagery of the hunting rifle. The barrel of the rifle is modified so that it is unfit both in its capacity as a weapon as well as in the presentation as a trophy.
Most recently his works were shown, among others, at Marta Herford (2015); Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden / Dresden Academy of Fine Arts (2014); dOCUMENTA (13), Kassel (2012); Oakland Museum of California (2010); Miami Art Museum (2006); The Museum of Modern Art, New York (2004); Tate Gallery, London (1999).
