Loretta Fahrenholz

Loretta Fahrenholz works in the mediums of film and photography, drawing in many ways on literature, film, and the visual arts. At the same time, her references are anchored in the present and are set in relation to current social developments in a unique way. The n.b.k. edition is based on a series of photographs Fahrenholz produced during an artist residency in Lisbon in the summer of 2020. The title of the series, Cicle Navel Nil, is borrowed from a poem by the German Dada artist Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven, who worked with fragmentation, changes of perspective, and the notion of dissolved corporeality in her texts. As in her post-cinematic films and videos, Fahrenholz implements a technique she developed to strongly abstract the photographic motifs and split them into individual elements. In a visual language reminiscent of abstract painting, her work conveys a sense of desolation and the isolation of the individual. Recent solo exhibitions of Loretta Fahrenholz’s work include at: Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (2021); Lumiar Cité / Maumaus, Lisbon (2021); Kunsthalle Bern (2019); Museum moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig, Vienna (2018); Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam (2016); Kunsthalle Zürich (2015); MoMA PS1, New York (2015); Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2015); White Columns, New York (2011).
