Laura Poitras

Laura Poitras is a filmmaker, artist, and journalist. After being contacted by the then anonymous NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, Poitras wrote numerous articles on global mass surveillance conducted by the US National Security Agency (NSA). She also documented these findings in her film CITIZENFOUR (2014), which won both the Oscar and the German Film Award. In 2016, Poitras and fellow journalists Henrik Moltke and Cora Currier reported on further revelations from the Snowden archive, including Operation Anarchist – a top-secret program run by the British intelligence agency GCHQ. From the top of the Troodos Mountains in the island-state of Cyprus, two antennas intercept signals from satellites, drones, and radars in the Mediterranean region, 24 hours a day. The large-format drone and satellite images of the ANARCHIST series, with an aesthetic reminiscent of abstract painting, are based on Poitras’s research on Operation Anarchist. The highly classified images depict different stages in the process of decoding the collected signals. For her reporting on the NSA, Poitras received the George Polk Award (2013) and the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service (2014). Recent exhibitions of her work include at: Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (2021); Onsite Gallery, Toronto (2018); Manifesta 12, Palermo (2018); Whitney Museum, New York (2016); Artists Space, New York (2014); Atlanta Contemporary Art Center (2010).
