Katja Strunz

Katja Strunz (*1970 in Ottweiler, lives and works in Berlin) studied philosophy, history and art history at the Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz as well as painting and graphic art at the State Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe. She is known for the complex artistic references in her work, which in its entirety she understands as an unfolding process. Strunz’ works deal with the geometry of space and the connection between space and time. Shifting surfaces form creases and folds, and characterize both her minimalist metal sculptures and the paper collages created since 1997. For the edition exclusively produced for Neuer Berliner Kunstverein the artist used parts and fragments of an antiquarian publication on European landscapes, which she assembled to abstract structures of forms, imprinted with the words “Compressed Substance Shift”. Originally flat, the illustrations again unfold into three-dimensional, dynamicobjects.

Most recently, her works have been shown at, among others, Contemporary Fine Arts Berlin (2017; 2013; 2011); Berlinische Galerie (2013); The Modern Institute, Glasgow (2012); Saarlandmuseum, Saarbrücken (2010).
