Candida Höfer

Candida Höfer (*1944 in Eberswalde, living and working in Cologne) studied photography at the Dusseldorf Art Academy with Bernd Becher and was a professor at the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design (1997-2000). Höfer works in series and became known as an artist for her portraits of immigrant workers. Later, Höfer portrays various interior architectures and spaces in public institutions for the preservation of cultural heritage. Despite the often overloaded interior views of full libraries or luxuriant museums, the motifs in Höfer’s photographs gain clarity, a great overview and a documentary character. The motifs seem illuminated, structured and often deserted. The edition In a Corner shows the corner of a simple workroom. Due to the precise exposure technique dirty spots on the bright, large surfaces of the walls and floor can be discovered, enriching the motif, as well as other details.

In addition to various art awards, Höfer received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic (2015); her works were shown in exhibitions, including Multimedia Art Museum Moscow (2016); Hermitage, Saint Petersburg (2015); Kunsthalle Bremen (2015); Albertinum, Dresden (2014); Landesgalerie Linz (2014); Stiftung Museum Kunstpalast, Dusseldorf (2013); Artipelag Konsthall, Gustavsberg, Sweden (2012); Villa Massimo, Rome (2010); 50th Venice Biennale (2003); documenta 11, Kassel (2002).
