Haris Epaminonda

In her diverse body of work, which includes collages, sculpture groups, films, and photography, Haris Epaminonda explores the “inherent life of images,” their power, essence, and logic. Her fascination with found material, such as photographic images from French magazines from the 1940s to the 1960s, led to her early work creating idiosyncratic collage compositions, linking past times and places. Through recontextualization, the works develop new narratives that function simultaneously as nostalgic and imagined moments. For n.b.k., Epaminonda developed works from a new photographic series drawing on the photo archive she has cultivated since 1997. The images, which the artist took with a 35mm camera, feature recurring motifs in Epaminonda’s work, such as her preoccupation with archetypal forms, colors, light, composition, figuration, and abstraction.

Epaminonda was awarded the Silver Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2019, and designed the Cyprus pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2007. Recent exhibitions of her work include at: Fabra i Coats, Barcelona (2020); Secession, Vienna (2018); Aspen Art Museum, Colorado (2017); Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo, Seville (2016); Le Plateau, Paris (2015); Villa du Parc, Annemasse (2015); Modern Art Oxford (2013); Museum of Modern Art, New York (2012); Tate Modern, London (2010).
