Emeka Ogboh

Emeka Ogboh’s interdisciplinary work delves into the interrelationships between sensory perceptions, their influence on personal and collective memories, historiographies, and how they translate into sound and food experiences. He often refers to the senses of hearing and smell, as well as connections to public places and architecture. His artistic creations, mainly taking the form of expansive installations, incorporate sound, architectural elements, found objects, videos and photography. This n.b.k. edition is part of Ogboh’s long-term project Sufferhead Original (2017–). For this work, the artist maps locations in Berlin linked to Germany’s colonial history. Ogboh collaborated with Black models on photoshoots, developing new narratives that question and challenge colonial histories inscribed in urban landscapes.

Emeka Ogboh’s (*1977 in Enugu / Nigeria, lives and works in Berlin) work has been presented internationally, including at Gropius Bau, Berlin (2021); Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (2019); The Power Plant, Toronto (2018); documenta 14, Kassel and Athens (2017); Tate Modern, London (2017); Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden (2017); Skulptur Projekte Münster (2017); Smithsonian National Museum of African Art, Washington, DC (2016); Venice Biennale (2015); ifa Gallery, Berlin (2015).
