A long-standing artistic exchange connects Stephan Crasneanscki (*1969 in Grenoble, lives and works in New York), founder of Soundwalk Collective, and the musician and poet Patti Smith (*1946 in Chicago, lives in New York): a collaboration titled CORRESPONDENCES. This is an ever-growing body of work comprising films, archival material, collages, poems, installations, performances, and vinyl records, each devoted to a different thematic focus, among them ecological catastrophe and climate change. Crasneanscki describes the working process with Patti Smith as an ongoing dialogue: his field recordings, which he describes as an archive of “sonic memories,” serve as the point of departure for Smith’s poetry. The fine art print was produced specifically for the n.b.k. Editions program in the context of the n.b.k. Billboard project of the same title (2025/2026) by Stephan Crasneanscki and Patti Smith. The multilayered imagery of the work combines Patti Smith’s poem Cry of the Lost, landscape photography, satellite imagery, and research material from Jean-Luc Godard’s film archive. A further source of inspiration was the naturalist, philosopher, activist, and anarchist Pyotr Kropotkin (1842–1921), who advocated for a society free of violence and domination and, owing to his aristocratic origins, was known as “the anarchist prince.”

CORRESPONDENCES has been shown worldwide in immersive exhibitions and live performances by Soundwalk Collective (Stephan Crasneanscki and Simone Merli) and Patti Smith, including at: LUMA Arles, France (2026); Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, Japan (2025); Piknic, Seoul (2025); Museo de Arte Moderno de Medellín (2024/2025); Onassis Foundation, Athens (2024); Tbilisi Photography and Multimedia Museum (2023).
