On the occasion of the exhibition Conversation Pieces (until 24 January 2014) in the Showroom of Neuer Berliner Kunstverein, the latest issue of the Brazilian magazine Arte e Ensaios is presented. The focus of the bilingual special edition “Urgências Urbana / Urbane Dringlichkeiten” (Urban Urgencies) is on the issues of city, knowledge, crisis and how they express themselves in urban spaces in Germany and Brazil. Artists, scientists and activists mainly from Rio de Janeiro and Berlin will be given the opportunity to speak.

The presentation begins with the performance walk Matadouro Boiada (2011/2013, approx. 30 min) by the artist Ronald Duarte. Duarte is considered one of the pioneers of public art and is internationally renowned for his actions, happenings and performances. His works are informed by a critical approach to the colonial history of Brazil and the resulting religious rites and practices, which he makes tangible in his performances. The work Matadouro Boiada, specifically adapted for Berlin, harks back to a survival strategy of farmers and cattlemen during the Portuguese colonial era. When crossing the river waters with plenty of piranhas, as a diversionary tactic, often the weak, elderly or sick bulls of the cattle herd were sacrificed to allow the rest of the herd a safe crossing. In Berlin, a herd masked with brightly painted bull-heads will parade through Mitte. Subsequently, the art historian Marilia Palmeira, together with the editors Cezar Bartholomeu and Robin Resch, presents the magazine at Neuer Berliner Kunstverein, as well as selected videos and movies by young Brazilian artists. The magazine can be purchased that evening at the subscription price.

The magazine Arte e Ensaios is published every six months by the post-graduate program of Visual Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts (EBA) of the Federal State University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and, as one of the few art magazines in Brazil, reflects international developments of fine art, in theory and practice. The current 26th edition is the result of an interdisciplinary collaboration with the master program in Space Strategies at the Berlin-Weissensee School of Art, funded by the German House of Science and Innovation in São Paulo (DWIH) as part of the Germany Year in Brazil (2013-2014).
