The Thinker
1989, 00:07:54, NTSC, Farbe
The video takes the format of a narrated science show or game show, with clear ironic overtones. The narrator presents an ape as he experiences his first intelligent thought, and then tracks the primate through history, noting several points in time as he reaches peaks of intelligence. At each historical juncture the man spills a quick stream of philosophical or scientific discoveries of the period, with key words scrolling behind him. He is seen as a Greek philosopher, a Shakespearian figure, and industrial age scientist, and lastly as a man of modern times (the late 80`s). This "post modern man ' is money obsessed, a business fanatic, a greedy super consumer, ranting about computers, credit cards, exercise and TV culture. Max Almy is making critically comments on the modern American, lost to consumerism and overproduction, with people so obsessed with money that they have broken the continuous line in history of higher thinking and intellectual development.
