On 5 October 2012, after two years of construction and planning, the Nordstern Videokunstzentrum NRW (Video Art Center) is opening in the former Nordstern mining pit in Gelsenkirchen. Architecturally impressive and artistically outstanding, the project will be exclusively hosting pieces from the collection of Video-Forum at Neuer Berliner Kunstverein and from the Goetz Collection, Munich. In biannual turns, major works of international video art from the past and present will be combined there. Neuer Berliner Kunstverein’s presentation is supported by Allianz Kulturstiftung.

The first temporary exhibition of this longstanding cooperation is to be entitled Schichtwechsel. It is to be devoted to the subject of work in a wide range of variations. Included in the display will be works from Francis Alÿs, Matthew Barney, Harun Farocki, William Kentridge, Tony Oursler, Hito Steyerl, Rosemarie Trockel, Silke Wagner and Artur Żmijewski. Alongside selected individual works from international artists in the form of extensive three-dimensional installations from the Goetz and Neuer Berliner Kunstverein collections, the ninth floor will be home to an archive documenting the history of video art, which will offer visitors the chance to independently develop their understanding of aspects of video art history using various viewing facilities. The central motif of the selected works will be an enquiry into the phenomenon of space in video art and its reference to space in the media, society, politics and psychology. The selected works from the Neuer Berliner Kunstverein will include contributions from Olga Chernysheva, Annika Eriksson, Elise Florenty, Bruce Nauman, Nam June Paik, Katya Sander, Richard Serra/Nancy Holt, Maria Vedder, William Wegman, Hague Yang and Heimo Zobernig.
