Jimmie Durham

The artist, poet, and activist Jimmie Durham (*1940 in Houston, †2021 in Berlin) began working as a sculptor in 1964. Since the early 1960s, he was also politically active in the American civil rights movement. His artistic and literary work often focused on the relationship between history and the environment as well as architecture and monumentality – taking a critical stance toward political power relations and narratives of national identity. In sculptures, film and video works, drawings, and texts, Durham described behaviors and norms of coexistence in different cultures and social systems.
