Vito Acconci
The Red Tapes
1976, 01:39:24, PAL, black/white, sound, A008 01
This two-part film is a collaged self-portrait, combining dark imagery, narrative story telling, performances, and streams of poetic verse. Vito Acconci constructs passages of language and free-flowing thought, layered with sounds and still images, addressing America and the artist s own imaginative fictional tales and abstractions. He dissects sounds of words and common phrases, but also deals more concretely with popular cultural themes such as mystery, crime, New York, and the general American political and social climate. Like a language symphony, he seamlessly weaves musical interludes, poetic rambling, talkative performances, stills of architectural spaces, and social commentary, to create a completely original artistic portrait.
