Richard (Dickie) Landry

Divided Alto

Influenced by the work of Keith Sonnier, the musician Landry considered the medium video as an ideal possibility to combine musical recording and performance. In Divided Alto, he documents an improvised flute play on a four-way split screen. The framing of the image is focused on the hands, mouth, and mouthpiece. From the movement of the hands, and the breathing of the musician emerge in the four images various forms of harmony and dissonance, synchronization and superimposition.
