In his Videolieder from the 1980s, Herbert Wentscher occupied a unique position between video art and popular culture. The catchy, intentionally naïve pieces using electronic music are—as a reaction to the broadcaster MTV—primarily dedicated to either everyday themes (Heimwerker) or large-scale subjects (Modernes Leben): towards this end, Wentscher created visuals in which he ironically doubles and at the same time interrogates the supposed lightheartedness of the songs: “the motif is great, the film is full.”
