Gerwald Rockenschaub

Gerwald Rockenschaub (*1952 in Linz, living and working in Berlin) is one of the internationally most renowned visual artists in Austria and at the same time successful as a (techno) musician and DJ. Music is part of his cultural background, in the light of which a complex sculptural oeuvre has emerged, from the geometrically constructed oil paintings of the early 1980s in the style of the “Neo-Geo” to machine-made Plexiglas plates and inflatable PVC objects to computer-generated animations. Rockenschaub’s work is characterized by analytical thinking and the principle of the reduction to a few but essential elements and structures.

His works have been shown in solo and group exhibitions, including Schauwerk Sindelfingen (2014); Secession, Vienna (2012); Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg (2011); Villa Stuck, Munich (2009); Kunsthalle Bern (2008); Temporäre Kunsthalle, Berlin (2008); documenta 12, Kassel (2007); Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Vienna (2005); Austrian Pavilion, Venice Biennale (1993).

For Neuer Berliner Kunstverein Rockenschaub created five different monochrome colored, minimalist wall objects, that individually or as an installation survey the ratio of object and space.
