Küche, Stube, usw.
Film night with Joachim Krausse, part I

Neuer Berliner Kunstverein hosts Akademie c/o

Akademie c/o n.b.k. presents during a two-evening session six films by Joachim Krausse, Joachim Schlandt and Jonas Geist, commissioned in the 70s by the Television program of WDR Cologne. The films, edited by Knut Fischer, come from a time when the WDR was still open to a challenging discourse, making possible contemporary political documentary films such as Arbeiterwohnungsbau and architecture research as in Küche, Stube usw., Arbeiterwohnungsbau describes the mechanisms for the provision of living facilities, showing condemned buildings and barracks of World War II forced-labor serving as the housing of guest workers. Küche, Stube usw. is an unusual and compelling experiment whose format of investigation involves research, theory and media presentation. The series, composed by five episodes, researches an archaeology of modernity in small housings; these dwellings play a relevant part in the process of industrialization, as competing successional building types that find their origin in the spatial unity of kitchen and living-room of simple farms. These films represent the beginning of a cultural history of ordinary life, where the history of the city is ultimately the history of the production of all living conditions.
